Facebook Like now available for Magento
Thanks to the quick response from our developer community, Facebook Like for Magento was made available within 24 hours of Facebook’s announcement at the f8 conference.
Facebook Like is an important product because it gives merchants an easy way to socialize their products through Facebook, which ultimately means more word of mouth marketing and less money spent acquiring new customers. Facebook also has some game-changing plans for the product in the future, and merchants who start using it now may have a big advantage down the road.
The extension is available for $29 through Magento Connect, but we reached out to retailEvolved, the company behind the extension, and they’ve agreed to offer a $10 discount for the Magento Community for a limited period of time. Just enter the code “MagentoConnect” at checkout to receive the discount. A demo of the product is available here. The extension is listed here.
This is a great example of how our community is leveraging the flexibility of Magento and the openness of our marketplace to keep our more than 60,000 merchants ahead of the curve. We now have over 2,200 extensions in the Magento Connect marketplace, and we’re seeing new developments like this every day. Have you seen an interesting extension that will make the Magento platform even more powerful for merchants? Be to let us know about it via Twitter.

200 Listings In The JRD... And Some Reflection On Our Community
Recently the Joomla! Resources Directory reached 200 published listings. A quick look just now and I see we are already at 202 :)
Does that mean that 202 people filled out a form and someone went into the admin and pressed a button to publish them? Not really.
What it means is that over the past ten months, many members of our professional community have offered us their listings for the directory and completed a pretty extensive process for us to be able to ensure that they meet the high quality standards we set out to maintain for the JRD nearly a year ago.
Looking Back Over the Dutch Joomladays
For me it is always a great experience to meet Joomla! people in real life. The last two days I was in Utrecht and joined the Dutch Joomladays. It was the fifth time the Dutch Joomldays were held and for me it was the second time I was able to attend. The team made a very good job, organization was perfect and the presentations I saw were very professional and interesting.
The event was held over two days and each day was focused on a specific audience. It started on Friday with a business day with presentations about the news about Joomla 1.6, Joomla! Security, Migration 1.5 -> 1.6 and many things more. The big challenge for me was that I made a presentation in a foreign language (English of course, not Dutch) for the first time. I talked about good websites and how to design them in an accessible way. I think it worked as I didn't got any tomatoes :-).
On the second day we heard a presentation form Fotis Evangelou about building a business with Joomla! and becoming millonare in about two weeks. I am not really sure if it will work but I will try it the next weeks :-)
The JED is Springing to a New Server
The Joomla Extensions Directory (JED) has become one of the highest traffic sites within the Joomla family, and our own Brad Baker recently posted a blog about just how heavily it's used. He analyzed our Joomla site hosting at Rochen's team blog. As a result, Rochen will be moving the whole site to a new server at :
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?day=26&month=4&year=2010&hour=7&min=0&sec=0&p1=240
The JED may have limited connectivity during DNS propagation, but we should be moved without incident over the course of that three hours.

More Distributions on Drupal.org
The excitement around distributions at DrupalCon San Francisco was palpable. Dries helped kick this off by naming distributions as one of the great growth potentials of Drupal in his keynote on the State of Drupal. Then there was the excellent panel on distribution packaging on Drupal.org, with participation from Derek and Chad from 3281d who did lot of work toward making fully packaged distributions possible, Kevin from Open Media Foundation, and Jeff. And of course there were lots of casual conversations around the topic. This excitement was for a good reason. Distributions have grown significantly in the six months since DrupalCon Paris, with 33 out of the 81 installation profiles on Drupal.org having been created in that time, Managing New and Open Atrium among them.
DrupalCon was a great opportunity to meet with the people involved with packaging distributions and identify concrete ways we can improve the infrastructure on Drupal.org and improve distributions. Right now, packaging distributions on Drupal.org works, and it is used for many installation profiles. However there are restrictions in place that hinder using Drupal.org as a host for packaged distributions. In order for distributions hosted on Drupal.org to continue to grow, there are three issues that need to be addressed immediately. Drupal.org needs to:
1. Allow external dependenciesMany distributions rely on jQuery UI or CK Editor or similar external libraries. These libraries can currently not be packaged into a distribution on Drupal.org.
2. Allow patchesDrush make allows you to apply patches to modules that are included in a distribution. This is a tremendous help when a distribution needs to be released before critical patches are committed upstream.
3. Allow custom themes and modules in installation profilesMany distributions contain custom modules or a custom theme that is only useful to their specific use case. We should not encourage people to add custom code into an already crowded namespace. At DrupalCon we discussed modules in this context, but I think we should also allow for themes.
This is the short version of what I think we need to do to encourage more distributions to be housed on Drupal.org. I've broken out the issues in more detail on a community initiatives page called Install Profile Packaging. If you're interested in improving distributions, please check it out and provide input over there. I'd like to move these issues along over the next couple weeks. My goal is to package the next Managing News release on Drupal.org :)

Artyom of aheadWorks at Magento Developers Paradise
You’ve seen their extensions on Magento Connect and boy, have you used them! I’m talking about aheadWorks of course, and you’ve helped to put them on the top of the ladder when it comes to great Magento extensions. Now you get to meet their CEO.
Artyom Rabzonov, CEO of aheadWorks was both a sponsor and an attendee of Magento Developers Paradise--one of the few who managed to make it in. Artyom came loaded to the gills with goodies to give away and everyone at the conference went home with a goodie bag, sponsored by aheadworks, filled with info pamphlets and an ecommerce puzzle along with other cool items--and most importantly, a discount certificate for aheadWorks extensions. Hear Artyom talking about connecting with the community in an intimate setting, how he was able to maximize his time with the audience, how much fun we really had on the island, and just what does happen when you eat your weight in seafood?
Artyom loved Mallorca so much, he decided to stay an extra few days and he leaves today. Let’s all wish him a safe trip back.
Coming up next… Some more videos, pics and some final thoughts on the Magento Developers Paradise experience.

Joomla Community Behaviour and Responsibility
Every once in a while you come across something that makes you say to yourself "If only I could express myself with the same words, this really makes sense to me." Recently, I've had two of these moments.
One was watching a presentation by Jono Bacon, Ubuntu Community Manager, entitled: "The Engines Of Community". If you haven't already done so, I encourage you all to take the time to watch this.
The second one of these moments (and I don't appear to be the only one that feels this way) was reading the following blog post from Jeremy Wilken entitled: "Dear Community". As with the first, I encourage you all to read it, and have quoted it in full below:
Dear Community,
I want to write an open letter to you all. In a struggle to think about all of the many angles that are present in the numerous community issues, I have come to realize a few things that have to do with our behavior, our comments, our actions, and most importantly our attitude.
It is a bit embarrassing because I have been guilty of most of the issues I'm about to raise here. I do hope we can all learn to grow out of these problems, and do something productive with our time. I'm going to just list issues, and provide a resolution for a way to handle the issue in a positive way. I don't wish to dwell and point fingers, we've all done it, and the best result is that we all try our best to .
I would be very happy if you would agree to these resolutions, which I hope will bring a positive turn to our community. If you have further issues to raise, please raise them in the comments below in the same kind of format, and avoid elaborating on the problem but focus on the resolution.
Complaining
Resolution: If I have a complaint, I shall register it with the proper person using the proper channel. If no clear channel exists, then I shall first seek information (probably via forum) about with whom I should speak. If it is still unclear what I should do, then I shall raise it as a question rather than complaint, and offer up possible solutions to encourage improvement.
Careless or drive by posting
Resolution: If I cannot devote the time or energy to reading or understanding the entire topic that is presented, then I shall refrain from posting my thoughts until I have done so. I will not create an ignorant post, creating a speedbump in the flow of ideas.
Negative overtones or undertones
Resolution: I shall think before I write or speak or act, and ensure that I review my comments to make sure they properly reflect my meaning without additional negative overtones. When prudent, I will try to have someone review my comments so I don't sound like a jerk.
Jumping to conclusions and accusations
Resolution: I shall ask questions before laying judgements or making statements. Rather than assuming details, I shall make sure I have proof or identify that information is unavailable and request it. Making assumptions always makes an ... you know the rest.
Missing the point of the topic
Resolution: I will read the entire thread of comments or posts before I add my own comments. I will also focus on the original post contents and not get caught up in off-topic threads. If a new topic comes to light, I shall work to start a new thread and encourage others to focus on the main topic.
Abusing the system
Resolution: I shall not abuse the community networks by trying to get extra personal or professional recognition. I will not abuse my client/contact base to rally activity around something directly related to me, such as a program review system.
Forgetting the Internet is public record
Resolution: Even when I'm using my personal blog/Facebook/Twitter/whatever, I shall not resort to hiding behind a personal account for negative out-lashing. Likewise, I will not forget that what I say is almost always online forevermore, and I commit myself leaving a good record for future generations.
Thinking negatively towards others in the community
Resolution: I will try my best to look at all members of the community as equal and remember that we all have the same goals. I may disagree with them or their actions, but I will respect them as a fellow community member. This includes those on leadership, those active in the community, and new members.
Having an air of importance
Resolution: Regardless of my own self-perceptions, I will avoid thinking of myself as better than others. I am not royalty, and while what I'm doing might be really important, my attitude should be humble. My ego should not be my defining factor.
Tearing down ideas without new suggestions
Resolution: If I disagree with someone, I will provide positive responses by suggesting alternatives. If I cannot think of an alternative, then I will ask questions about the issues I disagree rather than attacking it. I may give rationale for why I disagree, but it should always be accompanied by positive suggestions.
Make these resolutions to improve the community
Thank you to all of those who have kept a cool head or have provided wisdom over the past, your leadership is certainly the kind of attitude we all need to adopt. Most of these ideas have come from good examples in the community. I am going to try my best to follow these resolutions, and if (or when) I fail I do hope someone will step in and bring it to my attention. Accountability is at the heart of community. If we fail to do the kinds of things I have listed here, then I see little hope for the concept of an open source community. Its not just one community, its all communities. There will always be trolls in a community, bent on rage, but most of us are above that and its worth remembering that.

BeeCoder Team at Magento Developers Paradise
Despite all the travel disruptions, we had a great group of about 13 people who were able to make their way to Mallorca for the event. We managed to grab some videos of different things that went on--the mini-conf we ended up having, different events that took place and interviews with some of the attendees. One particularly cool group, were Laura and Miguel, from BeeCoder a startup in the south of Spain, that develop BeeShopy.
BeeShopy is an application which lets you connect your eCommerce site with Facebook and actually set up a shop, accept payments and even track stats right from within Facebook. Here is an interview we recorded with them just a few hours before they left to the airport, heading back home:
Laura and Miguel are currently prepping a BeeShopy Magento extensions for release in the next couple of weeks. Laura and Miguel came to learn more about Magento development and to learn about how awesome the Magento Community really is. If a smile is worth a thousand words, we think Magento has just made a couple of really good new friends.
Coming up next.... Artyom of aheadWorks talking about his experience and getting to meet community members who ended up being customers!

Data.WorldBank.org Launched Today on Drupal
Signaling the most aggressive open data push in the international development community to date, World Bank President Robert Zoellick launched Data.WorldBank.org this morning ahead of the organization's spring meeting. All of the World Bank's 2,000+ data indicators are now open and freely available to the public. This new website is the browser for some of the most commonly used data, built to let researchers and policy makers filter though the vast data sets and quickly jump to indicators. The site currently includes 339 indicators from 209 countries, and this is just the start.
Over the next several weeks we will work with the World Bank's team to add an additional 700+ indicators to the site. There is also a serious second phase road map that focuses on improving access to the the API and building capacity among a community of developers to better use the data.
We built the data browser using all open source tools. The site is powered by Drupal, the graphs use the Flot Javascript library for jQuery, and the map tiles are powered by MapBox, baked using TileMill, and served with OpenLayers. Here are some more details from the key sections of the site.
You can quickly sort indicators and map them:
LOST: The Magento Edition--What Rhymes with Community?
Turning Adversity into Opportunity!
The gates of Europe were officially shut…
As the volcanic cloud continued to kick butt…
A few of us made it to the spot…
We wouldn’t let it be all for naught… (So we had a mini-conf!!)
They told us our little island no one else could exit or enter…
So to track flights we set up a command center…
Some of us contemplated swimming back home…
While others made arrangements by phone…
Food supplies started running short…
But I am happy to report…
That we set out to search for some food…
In some Hummers with some bad attitude…
And with some help from the locals…
We stopped running in circles… (See, we’re sitting down)
We found and picked us some almonds…
And the best part about ‘em… (It’s inside, so you need to crack the shell)
Is we got to sit back and enjoy them…
While talking and learning about Magento! Best Community Ever!

Joomla Social Site RFC
For a very long time people in the Community Working Group (and the Sites and Infrastructure group before that) have wanted to create a social network style site for the Joomla! Community. Recently the Community Leadership Team has been discussing this idea (yet) again and also discussing a major redesign of all of the sites.
At the same time, we were pleased to see that JomSocial has decided to join the commercial GPL family and we were happy to have Azrul offer to work with the CWG to implement a JomSocial installation.
